Wife’s letter to lawyer

Email from Sarah (my wife) to attorney Neil Rockind after one particular home raid:

Neil,

Per our conversation I’m putting tonight’s events in writing the best I can.

Before I get into a recap a couple of things I found after we talked.

1. I found a yellow legal piece of paper in the basement where they spent a lot of time – it appears that the cops must have left. It says…

*Top locations for MJ Disp to launder money*

I don’t know if this is a totally asshole joke from them. Seriously inappropriate.

The handwritten sketch created by police referred to a satirical article we had posted on the widely read nonprofit advocacy site MarijuanaPatients.org—a platform Jake, attorney Paul, and I operated. The article offered commentary on how dispensaries were being forced out of traditional banking systems, using humor to highlight a very real and growing problem.

2. I’m not sure why they didn’t take it? There is a trademark application for *Hemp Well*. There was also a payment in Ryan’s name to a patent / trademark lawyer.

3. I talked to Ryan. I could barely make out what he was saying. He said they weren’t letting him out tonight and Tylenda hadn’t been there.

Here’s a recap of everything else….

– Ryan worked from home most of the day. We had dinner and went grocery shopping and were home before 7pm.

– Received a knock on the front door around 7:15 pm. 4 Warren police officers – lead was a detective Kevin Dailey. 2 Royal Oak officers that just watched me until they were called to another run maybe an hour in. One of the Warren officers left about 30 minutes before the others. They all joked about not minding to be there because they were on overtime (nice for the taxpayers). They left shortly after 9:00 when I called you.

– They told both Ryan and I to sit on the couch. Asked for my ID which I gave them and then told Ryan they were taking him in.

– From their comments it seemed that they had raided Warren too. They also made a lot of comments about the pills and saying that ties *this to that*. We did have 300 empty dropper bottles from Ryan’s Hemp Well in the basement. They took pictures but said they weren’t taking them, they took the inventory sheet in the delivery box instead.

– Searched the entire house. They took a lot of paperwork not outlined on the tabulation. I know end of year financials that we were saving for 2014 taxes are gone, mortgage statements, they took a lot of business cards and I heard them saying *this must be another one of his businesses* – not sure what the cards were, Ryan saves a lot but doubtful they actually had anything to do with us. Most likely just people he meets or works with.

– I am nervous they are going after all of our assets because when I protested that they can’t take paperwork in my name the detective started to give my mortgage statements back to me. One of the other guys said *if I was going to hide money I’d do it under my wife’s name too*. I couldn’t help myself – I told him I know he looked at my W2 and he knows I’m very comfortable on my own.

– They took a small amount of cash from the house. Interestingly enough most of the money was mine – they took it from my closet and I think they said $5000 in silver coins. Ryan told me at dinner that his dad had called him and asked him to pick them up for him, a gold broker in Birmingham. Its old school savings – nothing else.

– Searched our cars but said they didn’t take anything out. I wasn’t allowed off the couch so who knows.

– I noticed they left a deed to a house in Ryan’s company’s name, title to the 4-wheeler, patient files in the basement. Not sure why some stuff went but this stuff didn’t?

– Here’s the official list they put together with my comments.

– $1759 cash, 271 silver coins

– iphone – ryan’s

– macbook air – ryan’s

– misc medical marijuana literature – not sure exactly what this was

– misc bank statements – much more than bank statements, probably business and personal as well as investments

– misc tax / water bill – again probably both personal and business

– safe – they had to pry it out of the wall in our furnace room but they took it. Its still small enough to carry. they couldn’t get it open but i know we keep titles in there

– other records – one box from the garage

I’ve attached the search warrant with list.

If it helps get him home earlier – I’m a 4 month pregnant wife who’s dealing with health issues including rheumatoid arthritis. I’m trying to keep my stress level to a minimum.

Let me know what else I can help with and thank you.
