Smoking Marijuana in Public Sets Us Back

This article was originally published on the Marijuana Patients Organization site on February 19, 2013.

Do you think it’s acceptable for those in the medical marijuana community to smoke marijuana on camera or in public?

A recent Detroit Free Press video showed a marijuana patient, and “self appointed advocate” of the medical marijuana industry, smoking a joint during a filmed interview with the media outlet. It may be true that Mr. Wood’s points were very well organized and his dialogue intelligible, however, is it necessary to defy law by lighting up in public (on camera), a possible violation of the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act.

Too often patient’s voices are robbed by those with the intent of legalizing marijuana fully. Thieves who show less regard for socities growing acceptance and patient’s immediate need for the medicine, by trying to advance their own agenda. In order for the medical marijuana industry to continue forward, we must do a better job in controlling the message, and narrow the focus to only the medical use of marijuana and alienating the legalizers.

Remember there are lots of people out there watching and smelling everything that we do.

Sec. 7. (a) The medical use of marihuana is allowed under state law to the extent that it is carried out in accordance with the provisions of this act.

(b) This act shall not permit any person to do any of the following:

(3) Smoke marihuana:

(A) on any form of public transportation; or

(B) in any public place.

Is the Detroit Free Press considered a public place? While Mr. Woods message is on point, did he violate the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act on camera?

  1. i dont think it should be against the law because what if a medical patient lived in apartment building and the rules was no drugs on the property ? she would have to smoke it some where so why not outside .people are going way to far on this voting for medical marijuana when alchol has been destroying lives forever and no ones even try to bad them ,marijuana is way safe then alchol it wasnt killed no one

  2. This guy is an idiot and translove energy is not a place many real patients would go before or after the court case. This guy is a hippy looking for attention. You got it. Nice job and way to set us back. Shame on you Hollis Wood.

  3. This is not the point of the story. You can smoke anywhere but this guy did it on camera and set us all back Tonia. It says in the act it is illiegal so why did he do it?

  4. A person should be able to smoke Medical Marajuana anywhere that anyone is allowd to smoke cigarettes or any tobacco product. There is no proof yet that second hand smoke from marijuana causes any health problems like that of tobacco. If a person is smoking marijuana in a place that forbids smoking tobacco than yes they are breaking the law!!!

  5. Because of the stigma I do not agree with allowing the interview to film him inhaling. Sends the wrong message at the most important time.

  6. No but second hand smoke can cause others to get medicated by it. Even me as a MMMP member would not want to always be exposed to 2nd hand Marajuana smoke. What if I was planing on driving shortly ? People would have a right to breathe clean fresh air all the time in public, as for tobacco smoke, well you don’t cop a buzz off 2nd hand tobacco smoke.

What is really needed is places like over in Toronto where they have Vapor Lounges where only Marajuana smoking is allowed–no alcohol drinking and no tobacco smoking is allowed. Just weed and nothing else. Its so very cool over there, no medical license is needed. In fact most people there are college age students just having a good time. Its a place to socialize and enjoy smoking in a clean safe environment. They have comedy shows in the evening and music or movies during the daytime. The place on Younge st has been open for over 5 years now, 7 days a week, never raided or shut down once. In fact the police just come in sometimes just to chat and see how the place is doing but they never ever hassle the people there. Totally unreal compare to this “free USA”

I love the USA and the USA has treated me well in the past but somethings are really better over in Canada I am sad to say.
