The University of Mississippi has a long history of growing marijuana, the school produces around 45 pounds of cured cannabis each year. The marijuana is given to the National Institutes on Drug Abuse, and the plant material can be analyzed and tested for medical benefits. Given the changing tide in marijuana, and legislation in-place or proposed in nearly every state, Mr Obama is attempting to meet the demand.
The University of Mississippi is scheduled to grow 1,430 pounds of marijuana in 2014 per executive order. Fortunately for Obama, Ole Miss are old pros at cannabis cultivation, after all the school has grown the plant for decades.
More information will be released as it is available, but this is another huge leap in the right direction.
